“Đàn lợn âm dương” – Yin Yang Pig Herd (also known as Tranh Lợn đàn – Pig Herd Painting) depicts piglets gathering around their mother, each in a different posture: one wanting to climb on her back, another wanting to nuzzle into her belly, while others are heading towards a sweet potato leaf to eat. The composition is strong, simple, rich in stylized decorative elements, yet deeply imbued with realism. It embodies the wishes of farmers for increased production, a prosperous, joyful, harmonious, and happy life with many children.
On the body of the mother pig are two yin-yang swirls, creating both a visible beauty and containing the concept of the Five Elements. Beside her, the piglets are clustered around their mother. Each has a different posture; one wants to climb on her back, another wants to burrow under her belly, while others are playfully frolicking with great liveliness. The richly decorative images are harmoniously combined, forming a tight rectangle that is not at all rigid, exuding an atmosphere of abundance and warmth. On festive occasions, people draw yin-yang circles on the body of the “Ông Lợn” (Venerable Pig) for ritual offerings to the gods. These yin-yang circles are not only a sign of the “Ông Lợn’s” sanctification but also a symbol for warding off evil.
Because pigs can enhance wealth, it is best to hang a painting of a pig herd in the Wealth Star position to best promote its ability to attract fortune. Furthermore, in folk tradition, pigs symbolize money and are a significant family asset. Therefore, pig herd paintings have a very positive Feng Shui effect in attracting wealth and fortune. Pigs also represent carefree ease and quick, convenient problem-solving, thus leading to a higher likelihood of success.
